Littering fines

To the editor:

While traveling around town, I have noticed more and more trash lining the edges of the streets and in the grass near the street. It is obvious that the younger generation is missing some much-needed education.

My husband and I walked south down Wakarusa Drive from 24th Street and picked up trash along the easement to the street on the east side as far as the South Lawrence Trafficway intersection and halfway up the west side. Before we arrived at this point, someone lacking respect and manners threw out their trash from Sonic in the area we had just cleaned. After filling a 35-gallon trash bag, we headed home, and, yes, we stopped and picked up the Sonic trash.

I have a question for our city leaders: How many citations were issued for littering within the city for 2006? More time should be dedicated to stopping the litterbugs. Heavy fines and picking up trash along the streets will make them think twice before tossing their trash out the car window.
