City Commissioner David Schauner said today that he will seek a third term on the commission, becoming the first incumbent to announce a re-election bid.
"I think we have started a lot of very good projects," said Schauner. "But I'm still concerned about three things - fiscally responsible local government, job creation, and long-term planning for growth. Those will be the centerpieces of my campaign, and what I talk the most about."
Schauner, who is general counsel for the Kansas National Education Association, began serving on the commission in 2003. Schauner last won re-election in 2005, but since he finished third in the race, he received a two-year rather than a four-year term.
Schauner's seat is one of three that is up for re-election on the five-member commission. Commissioners Boog Highberger and Mike Rundle have not announced their plans, although Highberger has said he's strongly leaning toward running again.
The election will be April 3. If more than six candidates file for election, there will be a primary on Feb. 27. Schauner, who is making a formal announcement at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, is the third person to declare for the race. Rob Chestnut, the chief financial officer at Allen Press, and Mike Dever, owner of a Lawrence-based environmental consulting firm, previously have announced.

Greatly anticipating election day, when I can do my part to help put this guy out of office. Can I go ahead and vote now?

I am not voting for any one of the current incumbant losers on the current city commission. I have had my fill of roundabouts, green-spaced out comissioners, false advertising and other issues from this bunch of fraudulant representatives of the city.

What are they? I think the voters need to know which of projects you are proud of.
And, btw, who is "we"? Would that be the PLC?
And, then, Schauner said, ""But I'm still concerned about three things - fiscally responsible local government, job creation, and long-term planning for growth."
He has had four years, and has made things worse for Lawrence in every one of those issues.
What, is he running against his own record?

I will be voting against Schauner.

Politicaly speaking, running for any office means you are interested in politics and very interested in being elected. Politicaly speaking of course.

Running and winning are two different things, just ask Kline and Ryun. Since 2003 we have eagerly awaited the next election.

Thanks David for running. You've got my vote absolutely. This city needs to stand for economic development that brings high paying jobs - not minimum wage, part time Wal-Mart style jobs. This city needs to stand for planned, sustainable growth - not development at all costs for the benefit of developers.
For a livable Lawrence, re-elect David Schauner.

what rock does "Tex" live under, oh, he/she/it lives under a roundabout, I get it.
if there aren't enough good candidates this spring, let's vote for the anti-PLC/GRA's and then fill out the number of permitted votes with writing in "bigfoot" as a protest vote against PLC/GRA, since Bigfoot would be the perfect representative of them.

and, it is high time to change Lawrence governance so that it operates on a system of aldermen, wards, etc., instead of the current open-seat city commission. we need city commissioners/aldermen/wardmen who represent a district of Lawrence each.

Which of you anti-current commission folks are going to actually put it on the line and run for commission?

Good points, Gnome. The school board needs to do the same; "all at large" is a cop out.
