Drainage district candidates still can file
Some Douglas County residents will decide who will serve on a drainage district board in the April general election.
Drainage boards work with city and county officials on water drainage issues. They also keep certain tributaries clear of brush, trees or other blockages such as beaver dams.
Not everyone lives in a drainage district, but there are four districts and each has a three-member board. All positions are up for election every four years. They are paid a nominal fee that varies.
To run for election on a drainage board that serves, there is still time to file as a candidate. The deadline is Wednesday. There is no filing fee.
The filing deadline for all other elective positions was last month, and a primary will be Tuesday.
Here are the candidates who had filed as of Thursday, according to the clerk’s office:
Douglas County Kaw Drainage District: Arch Naramore and Michael D. Heck, both of Lawrence.
Wakarusa Kaw Drainage District: William Penny, Lawrence.
Wakarusa, Haskell, Eudora Drainage District: William Meairs Jr., Clay Meseraull and Steven Meseraull, all of Lawrence.
No one has filed for the Weaver Bottoms Drainage District board.
