Chestnut, Dever lead city race campaign funding

One week until election

Rob Chestnut and Mike Dever continue to be the leaders in the Lawrence City Commission race when it comes to attracting campaign donations, according to reports filed today.

Chestnut, the chief financial officer at Allen Press, raised $19,743.76 between Jan. 1 and Feb. 15.

Dever, the owner of a Lawrence-based environmental consulting firm, raised $15,690.09 during the same time period.

Both Dever and Chestnut were the top two fundraisers during the previous reporting period, which included donations made in the 2006 calendar year.

Carey Maynard-Moody, a retired school social worker, was next at $10,495.

Commissioner David Schauner, general counsel for the Kansas National Education Association, received $9,202 in contributions.

James Bush, a local pastor, received $6,660 in donations.

Michael Limburg, a Lawrence forklift operator, filed a report but said he did not receive any donations during the time period. Commissioner Boog Highberger, an attorney with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and Sam Fields, a local bail bondsmen, had not yet filed reports with the county clerk’s office this morning.

Neither candidate is late, though. Candidates have until 5 p.m. today to file campaign finance reports.

Jake Davis, a local musician and data entry operator, previously signed an affidavit saying he did not intend to raise nor spend more than $500 in the campaign. That means he does not have to file the campaign finance reports.
