Free State puts three in top finals

Boyer leads Lions in qualifying

? Free State swimmers qualified for the championship finals Friday in three events at state – Chase Torgerson in the 100 backstroke, Cameron Case in the 200 individual medley and Mitch Moore in the 100 breaststroke.

And Lawrence High’s Alex Boyer made today’s consolation finals in two events, the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

Torgerson placed second in Friday’s preliminaries in the 100 backstroke in a time of 54.22. Torgerson also qualified for the consolation finals in the 200 freestyle, and Case made the consolation finals in the 500 freestyle.

“Cameron Case swam a phenomenal 200 I.M.,” Free State coach Annette McDonald said. “And we were seeded 19th in the 400 free relay, and we ended up 14th.

Free State’s Moore, Kendall Harris, Case and Torgerson were 14th in the 400 freestyle relay, and Torgerson, Julian Spangler, Moore and Harris were ninth in the 200 medley relay.

Boyer was one of the highlights for Lawrence High. He placed 11th in preliminaries in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

“They all swam at or better than their best,” Lawrence High coach Kent McDonald said of the LHS swimmers. “Alex Boyer qualified in the two distance races. He did really well.”

The top eight placers qualified for today’s championship finals, and the next eight qualified for consolation finals. Diving semifinals begin at 10 a.m. at Hummer Sports Complex, and swim finals will start at 12:30 p.m.
