Former lawmaker to join tax appeals board

Former lawmaker Bruce Larkin will replace Tom Slack on the Kansas Board of Tax Appeals.

Slack resigned at the end of the year after local and state officials scrutinized Slack’s relationship to attorneys who appeared before the board.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ office also investigated Slack’s relationship to some tax attorneys for whom Slack used to work.

The three-member board resolves disputes between taxpayers and taxing authorities and helps ensure all property is assessed in an equal manner.

Larkin spent 19 years in the Kansas House, 13 of those on the Tax Committee. He retired from the House in 2005 to work for the Kansas Department of Revenue.
