Students compete for national scholarships

Kansas University juniors Jay Marshall Kimmel of Wichita and Cristina Avelina Fernandez of Washington, D.C., and Asuncion, Paraguay, are among the 600 students nationwide to be nominated for Harry S. Truman scholarships, which provide up to $30,000 for college students who are preparing to become leaders in public service.

Both are majoring in political science and economics. About 200 Truman scholarship finalists will be named next week, and after an interview process, 75 students will win the scholarship.

Also, four KU students have been nominated for Barry M. Goldwater scholarships, which are known as the premier undergraduate scholarships in science, engineering and mathematics. The nominees are Stephanie Ann Hill, Shawnee sophomore in chemistry and biochemistry; Heather Marie Owen, Leawood junior in electrical engineering; Kyle Hesed, Pawnee Rock sophomore in biology; and Laura A. Stiles, Prairie Village junior in engineering physics.

Goldwater scholarships provide up to $7,500. Winners will be announced in late March or early April.
