Since the snow started falling this afternoon, Lawrence police have responded to 19 noninjury accidents, police spokeswoman Kim Murphree said.

The calls have been widespread across the city, including three on Iowa Street, two on Wakarusa Drive and two on Louisiana Street.

No injuries have been reported, Murphree said.

Emergency dispatchers have also reported several slide-offs in the county this afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued a Snow and Blowing Snow Advisory for Lawrence and Douglas County, and forecasters have predicted a total nighttime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches.

I know that a state vehicle inspection process is a bureaucratic grifting nightmare, but people, the original tires that came with your car 9 years ago are not going to get you up the hill in the snow.

There's this really neat design on my driveway now from where I got halfway up, stopped moving forward, and spun a full 180% around trying to get situated or something. Fun stuff.

    Dear drivers,

You are not any more important than the driver in front of you. Your right to be in a hurry to reach your destination is negated by your lack of a right to hurt someone else on the road. Countless people just drove straight through red lights. It was not because they couldn't stop. I saw three accidents on my way home from work, all of them were someone plowing into the car in front of them. All stupid, preventable collisions. When people are going to learn that they can't drive in snow the way they normally do is beyond me.

slow down out there. Get home safely.

    Sincerely,

    compmd

Yes, it is true that you should slow down and not cause accidents. Don't drive faster than road conditions dictate as safe.

It's also true that if your tires or driving skills are so bad that you can't go faster than 5 miles per hour that you should stay off the roads.

What a surprise- People seem to throw all common sense out when winter weather kicks in.

you'd think they'd have had some practice this season! what?

  9. snowWI (anonymous) says…

There really has not been that much snow in Lawrence and Douglas County this season compared to other areas across the region. What we need is a big snow year so everyone learns how to drive in winter conditions again.

Well said. this goes for about 80% of drivers out there.

Yes I will agree, a $50,000 4 wheel drive vehicle will drive just as nice on ice at 50mph as it does on dry ground. Lots of drivers think that everyone is going way too slow on ice and snow when in fact this person is going way too fast

And please, clean off all windows in your cars before you drive. Snow, ice, frost, fog. Doesn't matter. Clean the windows!

I've had about enough of this Winter Wonderland crap. I am looking for robins and green leaves (or even buds). I started out for a run across town, got a little ways down the road and turned around and came home. It wasn't worth it and what I needed to do can wait until Monday. If it isn't necessary, stay home!!
