Readers needed to help celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday

Volunteers are needed to read children’s books aloud to elementary school children and assist with arts and crafts activities on March 2, Dr. Seuss’ birthday, during the 10th annual “Read Across America” event. The Roger Hill Volunteer Center “Why Wait To Read?” Giving Library will play host to the event. Volunteers will help each child pick out a book from the library to take home with them.

¢ Community Living Opportunities is seeking a human resource assistant, volunteers with interest in researching grants and grant-writing experience, and volunteers interested in helping with fundraising activities such as coordinating special events.

¢ The Big Brothers Big Sisters program is in need of volunteer bowlers for the Bowl for Kids’ Sake event. Dates for bowling at Royal Crest Lanes are at 9:30 p.m. Friday; 6 p.m. Saturday; 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday; 9:30 p.m. Feb. 23; and 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Feb. 24. ¢ Independence Inc. is seeking a volunteer to drive an individual with a visual impairment from Lawrence to Topeka twice a week. The volunteer will receive gas reimbursement and a stipend for services. Volunteers are asked to undergo an interview and submit references.

¢ Lawrence Boys and Girls Club seeks community volunteers to assist with its annual basketball tournament on March 3. The event brings together teams from all local Boys and Girls Club after-school sites.

¢ Health Care Access Clinic is in need of more than 150 volunteers to help with its annual Lawrence Half Marathon & 5K, formerly the Raintree Run. The event will be at 8 a.m. April 15. The event will benefit Health Care Access Clinic and a surgery fund for Gibson Huston, grandson of Raintree School’s directors.
