Motor carriers fined $63,000 in 2006 period

The Kansas Corporation Commission announced this week that it assessed $62,750 in fines and penalties against 48 motor carriers in the state, including two area companies, for violations from July to September in 2006.

The KCC fined Reed Dillon & Associates, a Lawrence-based landscape architecture and construction company, $1,500 for allowing or requiring a driver to operate a commercial motor vehicle without operating authority and without a periodic inspection. A company spokesman could not be reached for comment Friday.

The KCC also fined Eudora-based 8 Ball Xpress $1,500 for failing to implement an alcohol and controlled substance testing program and failing to maintain a current motor vehicle record for each driver employed.

Office coordinator Darwyn Pat Weaver said the company has paid the fine and is in compliance with the U.S. Department of Transportation. The violation stemmed from not getting licensing and alcohol and drug testing information together in time when a driver started working last year, he said.
