Lawrence schools take home chess trophies

Three Lawrence elementary schools swept top prizes in a chess tournament in Topeka.

Chess teams at local elementary schools claimed all three trophies in Saturday’s K-6 division of the Topeka Collegiate Chess Tournament.

Quail Run won first, Wakarusa Valley took second and Cordley placed third in its division.

Quail Run also placed third in the K-3 Division.

In the K-12 division, Southwest Junior High won first place.

Individually, Southwest Junior High’s Alan Shi and Wakarusa Valley’s Cal Young finished first in K-12 and K-6, respectively.

Other local medal winners in K-12 were: Thomas Reams, second; Roy Wedge, fifth; Peter Lesslie, sixth; Thomas Clark, seventh; Kellen Cross, 12th; Keely Stenseng, 13th; Douglas Rawlings, 31st; and Alex Kincaid, 47th.
