Lawrence schools take home chess trophies

Three Lawrence elementary schools swept top prizes in a chess tournament in Topeka.

Chess teams at local elementary schools claimed all three trophies in Saturday's K-6 division of the Topeka Collegiate Chess Tournament.

Quail Run won first, Wakarusa Valley took second and Cordley placed third in its division.

Quail Run also placed third in the K-3 Division.

In the K-12 division, Southwest Junior High won first place.

Individually, Southwest Junior High's Alan Shi and Wakarusa Valley's Cal Young finished first in K-12 and K-6, respectively.

Other local medal winners in K-12 were: Thomas Reams, second; Roy Wedge, fifth; Peter Lesslie, sixth; Thomas Clark, seventh; Kellen Cross, 12th; Keely Stenseng, 13th; Douglas Rawlings, 31st; and Alex Kincaid, 47th.

BRAVVO! good job kids! keep it up, you will do better in life because you work your mind with Chess. also, kudos to the adult sponsors of the various chess clubs.
