FSHS scholars advance to state competition

Free State High School’s top scholars will go head-to-head against their peers from eight other Kansas high schools this weekend in the state Scholars Bowl tournament.

FSHS earned a spot at state by placing third in the Class 6A regional tournament last week at Leavenworth High School.

Those on the FSHS team were Benjy Greenberg, Jack Berkowitz, Bryce Baringer, Ruth Byers, Bonnie Drees and Kevin Song.

They are coached by Oather Strawderman.

FSHS will face regional first-place winner Olathe East, second-place Leavenworth and fourth-place Blue Valley North.

They also will face the top four schools from the other 6A Regional tournament: Garden City, Maize, Wichita East and Campus High School in the Haysville district.

Scholars Bowl is an academic competition sanctioned by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.

In regional and state play, each round consists of one question from foreign language, three each from social science, language arts, mathematics and science/health, two from fine arts and one about events that took place in 2006.
