Backlog disgrace

To the editor:

I am appalled that our Board of Regents, Legislature and governor have let our public university buildings fall into disrepair. I think taxpayers in the state of Kansas have always supported our universities and I feel that the powers-that-be want to place some of the blame on us taxpayers. An annual maintenance program should be a part of the regents’ budget every year. To allow the infrastructure repairs at our regents schools to fall behind in the amount of $575 million plus is a disgrace!

At Kansas University, for example, numerous new buildings have been constructed recently, and it seems to me that the ones in need of repair should have been addressed first. Further, to collect money from commuters as an additional source of funding is wrong. It would make more sense to incorporate an increase in the out-of-state and out-of-country tuition to generate more revenue instead.
