Armour Eckrich to close plant

? Armour Eckrich Branded Meats announced Thursday that it would close its processing plant in Kansas City, Kan., this fall, eliminating 280 area jobs.

The company said it was consolidating its processed meats production to other centers and would close the Kansas City plant effective Aug. 31.

The move affects 280 jobs, and some workers or their bargaining representatives were scheduled to receive 60-day notices of job eliminations Thursday, the company said. Some salaried workers will be offered opportunities to transfer to other company centers.

“This was a difficult but necessary decision to shift production to other plants,” said Michael Brown, president of Armour Eckrich.

Armour Eckrich – which markets packaged meats to retail grocers, delis, restaurants and other food service establishments – is a unit of John Morrell & Co., a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods Inc. Smithfield acquired the assets of the branded meats business of ConAgra Foods Inc. in October.
