A preliminary report by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office shows that the driver in a fatal wreck early Tuesday morning in Douglas County may have been under the influence of alcohol.

The report, released Wednesday by the sheriff's office, also said the driver, 23-year-old Kyle Almeida, was going too fast for the conditions on the gravel stretch of East 1600 Road.

The wreck occurred just after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, when Almeida's 1997 Ford Taurus went out of control just after the road - also known as O'Connell Youth Ranch Road - switched from pavement to gravel.

According to the report, the car was traveling straight on the road when it began to skid, eventually flipping several times before coming to rest in the west ditch. Almeida, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A coroner's report was not complete Wednesday.

Almeida's passenger, Tim Beggs, 26, Lawrence, was wearing a seat belt and suffered minor injuries. He was treated and released at the scene.

That sucks this happened to such a bright, young student, but it was like 2:30 in the morning. Are we really reporting that alcohol was a factor like someone's going to be surprised? Some things may be best left unsaid, especially if it's not news.

This is terrible, but I'm not surprised. Even if this true, I feel for his family.
