Snow stopper

To the editor:

Once again, our city leaders can’t see the quarter because the nickel is too close to their eyes. “Major service cuts to the T,” another headline form the Journal-World. Seems redundant : been there, done that.

Same old story, large cuts or perhaps eliminating the service. “Can we afford the service at all?” questions my future barber (maybe). Hey, Mike, the buses go by your business all day long. Ever taken a ride? I ride it every day, plus walk or ride my bike where it doesn’t go. The T is not a luxury; it’s a necessity for a lot of people, including me. Mike, it will pick you up at Ninth and Mass. and take you wherever you want to go. Might have to walk a bit, but so what?

EXCEPT when it snows. It is impossible to walk or ride your bike on nonshoveled sidewalks. I walked from the Merc at Ninth and Iowa to Dillons on 23rd Street on Sunday. No T service; imagine that. No one had shoveled their walks: Commerce Bank, Montana Mike’s, Cap Fed, all the way to 23rd. East on 23rd was no different, except for Dillons.

As I stated in a previous letter to the editor, the city has a law that you are required to remove your snow within 24 hours or get a $20-per-day fine. Enforce the law. Get the snow cops out. Write tickets. Collect the fines. Get the revenue; give the money to the bus system.

As Paul Simon once said, “Get on the bus, Gus; make a plan, Stan :” Who knows, you might meet Mrs. Robinson.
