Hotel opposed

To the editor:

Emeritus member of the Lawrence Preservation Alliance State Sen. Marci Francisco has opposed before the Planning Commission the height variance to 95 feet for the top two floors of the proposed Oread Hotel and the additional 14 condominium units on top. The city of Lawrence Historic Resources Commission voted unanimously against the project, finding that it adversely affects the environs of a local landmark, the Snow House at 706 W. 12th St. I was the former owner of the Snow House who put it on the National Register of Historic Places.

I opposed this project and the spot zoning changes, which entirely revise the traditional zoning. The current proposal is 238 feet long, as it faces Indiana Street, and is taller than the U.S. Bank building at Ninth and Massachusetts, having 92 hotel rooms and 14 condominiums with a 200-car, four-level parking garage. This does not fit the neighborhood and is simply too large.
