City to consider 7-story hotel soon

Plans for a seven-story hotel on the edge of the Kansas University campus are heading next month to the Lawrence City Commission.

City commissioners now are scheduled to give possible approval to the project at their Jan. 8 meeting. The city’s Historic Resources Commission discussed the project at its meeting Thursday, but decided to make no recommendation on the project, which is slated for 12th and Indiana streets.

Instead, commissioners offered comments on the design of the 105,000-square-foot building and decided to send it on to city commissioners. The Historic Resources Commissioners previously had reviewed the project and determined it did not fit in with the surrounding historic neighborhood.

But the design of the project has changed since the HRC last reviewed the project. That sparked city commissioners in November to ask the HRC to look at the project one more time before commissioners took action.
