County vaccines not among recalls
Two children’s vaccines recalled by a manufacturer Wednesday are not part of the inventory at the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department, officials said.
Merck & Co. could not assure sterility for specific vaccine lots and recalled 1 million doses of two Hib vaccines. Both vaccines protect against pneumonia and meningitis and one vaccine also protects against hepatitis B.
The vaccines, which were distributed beginning in April, are given to children in a series of doses up to the age of 5. At this time, no contaminated vaccine has been found.
The health department purchases its Hib vaccine from Sanofi Pasteur, which is the only other manufacturer of the product in the U.S.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children who may have been exposed to contaminated vaccine would have developed an infection within a week of immunization. Children who have received the vaccine do not need to be revaccinated.
