Icy weather ruins Tuesday hoops

Postponement of Tuesday night’s scheduled Free State-Topeka High girls basketball game may have been a blessing for the Firebirds.

That’s because Free State is also scheduled to play tonight, thanks to weather-related postponements in last weekend’s Bonner Springs Invitational tournament.

Free State coach Bryan Duncan learned of the latest postponement Tuesday morning, and was pleased.

“You don’t want to play too many games back-to-back-to-back early in the season,” Duncan said, “especially with a young team.”

The Firebirds are slated to meet Savannah, Mo., at 8:15 p.m. today in the fifth-place game of the Bonner Springs tourney. Free State High’s boys also will be playing for fifth place in the Bonner tourney when they tangle with Lansing at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday’s girls game with the Trojans, called off because of icy conditions, has been tentatively reset for Jan. 5.

The bad weather also forced postponement of Seabury Academy’s scheduled girls and boys home basketball games with Jefferson North. No makeup dates have been set.

Postponed, too, was the Veritas Christian boys basketball game at St. Mary’s Academy. It has been rescheduled for Feb. 11.
