Toy collection programs go into safety overdrive

Toys for Tots has a list. And they are checking it twice. Maybe even three times.

This year, as millions of toys have been pulled from the shelves for safety reasons, the question of naughty and nice has turned from children to toys.

Mary Jones, coordinator of Douglas County Toys for Tots, said the local branch of the nonprofit agency has made lists of the recent recalled toys. Plans are to check the thousands of toys as they come into the toy distribution shop and then again when they are put out on display.

And if parents still have concerns, they can access lists on computers or on paper before they take any toys home.

The extra checking will take some time and volunteers, Jones said. But it is something that has to be done.

“It’s just another step, another problem,” Jones said. “But we want to keep the children as safe as possible.”

Toys for Tots will have quite a few toys to inspect. Last year, more than 6,000 toys were donated. And, for this season more than two dozen businesses across Lawrence are collecting toys for the drive.

Jones said she is confident that local stores have pulled the recalled toys, but knows there are toys that were bought last year or somewhere outside of Lawrence.

She has yet to see any recalled toys donated.

Toys for Tots, a national foundation, has asked all chapters to follow due diligence in handing out toys and to make sure Web sites are available to parents, Jones said.
