Firebirds postponed

Free State High’s boys and girls basketball teams have to wait a extra day to open play in the Bonner Springs Metro Prep Tipoff basketball tournament.

The winter storm that dumped snow on the northeast portion of Kansas throughout the day Thursday caused officials at Bonner Springs High to push back the first round of the tournament.

The first round was slated to begin Thursday but now will be played today, with all second-round match-ups coming Saturday. All tip times will remain the same.

The final round of the event will be played either Monday or Wednesday of next week. Bonner athletic director Garold Baker was still in communication with other schools Thursday night and had not yet made a final decision.

The appearance will be the fourth in a row for the Free State girls, who won the event in 2005 and finished second in 2004 and 2006.

The FSHS girls will face Shawnee Heights, of Topeka, at 8:15 p.m. this evening.

The Free State boys are slated to appear in the Bonner Springs tournament for the first time and also will take on Shawnee Heights. Tip time is set for 6:30 p.m.
