Haskell aids children of financially strapped students

Students at Haskell Indian Nations University are getting some help this holiday season.

The university’s Adopt a Haskell Rascal program is in its fourth year of assisting the children of students.

“It’s difficult for a lot of our students, being working parents,” said event coordinator Sherry Girty. “They’re financially strapped at this time of year.”

Donors are matched with children ranging in age from newborns to high schoolers. Donors may give each child a maximum of four gifts. Last week, 131 children had been signed up, and about 50 remained up for adoption.

“It’s a big help,” said Rhiannon Metoxen, a Haskell senior. “We’re going through hard times being broke college students.”

Some students such as Loretta Dockrey, a Haskell senior, adopt children from the program as well as letting their kids participate.

“I just understand how hard it is when you have kids and go to school full time,” Dockrey said.

Gifts will be accepted through Thursday and will be distributed Saturday at the Annual Christmas Program. Anyone interested may contact Girty at 979-5501 or by e-mail at sgirty@haskell.edu.
