Bonner Springs Following a rout in its home opener Tuesday, Free State High’s boys soccer team kept rolling on the road Thursday with a 7-0 victory at Bonner Springs.
Four minutes into the match, Firebirds senior forward Erik Slan opened things up with a goal, and junior midfielder Parker Liebl made it 2-0 in the 13th minute.
The third goal for Free State came on an own goal a few minutes later when the Firebirds’ Andrew Heck booted a free kick that a Bonner Springs defender knocked in.
Heck assisted Slan’s goal to open the second half. A few minutes later, freshman Diego Gonzalez scored off of a free kick by Daniel Chance to make it 5-0.
Heck later scored on a free kick, and junior Dale Shillington scored the final Firebirds goal with less than five minutes remaining.
Coach Jason Pendleton was surprised by his team’s 7-0 victory because, he said, the teams were evenly matched from an athletic standpoint and Bonner Springs possessed the ball just as much as Free State.
“We don’t feel like we were seven goals better than them,” he said, noting that efficiency — the Firebirds scored on 10 shot attempts — was critical.
