Alcohol contributed to crash, police say

Lawrence police said Wednesday that alcohol was a contributing factor in an Aug. 21 crash on Naismith Drive involving five Kansas University students.

The 1:10 a.m. accident occurred when the driver of a black Ford Mustang crossed the median and struck a tree, injuring all five of the Kansas University Oliver Hall residents in the car.

According to a police report, when officers arrived they found two individuals in the street. They had apparently been ejected from the car. Another two students were sitting on the curb with cuts and scrapes, while a third student remained trapped inside the automobile. The report says the driver, Nicholas Dutoit, accelerated rapidly before encountering a curve in the road, and then lost control of the vehicle, which struck a tree. Passenger Christopher Hong estimated the vehicle was traveling at 30 mph.

The driver and passengers have been released from the hospital.
