Fiery crash sends two to hospital

Two area residents were transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries Tuesday night following a head-on collision on the Kansas Highway 10 bypass about one-half mile south of the Lecompton interchange.

About 9:20 p.m., Deanna Hamby, 38, of Lawrence, was driving a 1990 Mercury Topaz southbound with the vehicle fully in the northbound lane, Kansas Highway Patrol Master Trooper Terry Berner said. One vehicle swerved to miss the Topaz, Berner said. Hamby’s vehicle then collided with a northbound Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Eleanor Lohmann, 57, of Lecompton.

The Topaz spun around the other vehicle and caught fire, Berner said. Crews had to extricate Hamby from the vehicle.

Hamby was admitted to LMH in fair condition. Lohmann’s condition was not known early this morning.

The Highway Patrol is investigating, Berner said.
