Saturation patrol results in 3 arrests

Three people were arrested on drunken driving charges this weekend as part of a saturation patrol and vehicle check lanes operated by Lawrence police and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

During a patrol from 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, police issued 48 speeding tickets, 17 tickets for other violations and 38 seat belt citations. Police also reported one arrest for driving under the influence and one for marijuana possession.

For three hours beginning at 11 p.m. Saturday, police stopped 198 vehicles at a sobriety check lane in the 800 block of North Third Street in North Lawrence. Five people were given a field sobriety test, and two more people were arrested on DUI charges, said Kim Murphree, a police spokeswoman.

Lt. Kari Wempe, a sheriff’s spokeswoman, said officers in the county issued five speeding tickets during a saturation patrol. On the sheriff’s side of the check lane, 234 cars were stopped, but no one was arrested or ticketed, Wempe said.
