Man hospitalized after early-morning fight
A 23-year-old Lawrence man was hit in the face with a rock during a disturbance early Thursday morning in the 1000 block of Pennsylvania, Lawrence Police said.
Travis Viehweg was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan. On Thursday night, KU officials said he was no longer at the hospital and could not offer any details. Earlier, Lawrence police spokeswoman Kim Murphree said his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
According to a police report, the incident occurred about 3:40 a.m. when Viehweg was riding a bicycle eastbound along 10th Street traveling with three adult male friends on foot. The four men walking home got into an altercation with four or five juveniles. When they reached an alley between New Jersey and Pennsylvania streets, three of the men ran southbound and the victim rode his bike southbound down the alley.
Viehweg reported he stopped and six to eight younger males ran up to him and he was struck with a rock in the side of the face and was unable to see anything after the incident. Lawrence police arrested Christopher Boyle, 19, for allegedly battering the victim. The investigation continues.
