Good decision

To the editor:

Wal-Mart’s previous plan to build a store at the northwest corner of Sixth and Wakarusa had been denied by the City Commission. The case has been going on for a while and has cost the taxpayers some legal fees.

I hope the present city commissioners continue to approve Wal-Mart’s plans to build the store. The traffic couldn’t be much of a problem since Sixth Street – especially at the intersection – has been widened.

Wal-Mart might not be the best of stores that people can start working at, but a job is a job and a lot of people work at Wal-Mart because there is a job for them. The salary might not be as high as those offered by other businesses to start working. Like other businesses, the salary increases as one works longer – say, five to 10 or more years. A person has to like the job or learn to like the job or the work can’t be done well. If one really doesn’t adjust to the work one is doing, the person can find another job somewhere else.

Like some other businesses, Wal-Mart has contributed to the economy of the city of Lawrence, and more so when the present request of Wal-Mart to build another store is approved by the city commissioners.

If the Wal-Mart store is established at Sixth and Wakarusa, some people living close to the area can get a job in the store and won’t have to drive far from their home.
