Zoning projects on commission agenda

Among the issues city commissioners have on their agenda tonight are a pair of development projects that neighbors are watching closely.

At their 6:35 p.m. meeting at City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets, commissioners will hear a request to rezone approximately 1 acre at 523 through 543 Rockledge Road. Developers are asking the property to be rezoned to allow for five homes to be built on the property. Currently, the vacant property is zoned for a maximum of three homes. Several neighbors have objected to the increased density of the proposed project.

In another project, commissioners are being asked to change zoning for property at the northeast corner of Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive. Lawrence architect Michael Treanor is proposing a mixed-use “traditional neighborhood design” project for the corner. Treanor is asking the City Commission to remove a previous condition that was placed on the property that prohibited businesses that sell liquor from the site. The property is adjacent to Free State High School, but Treanor said it is far enough away to meet all state requirements for allowing a liquor store or restaurant that sells liquor.
