The better deal

To the editor:

In response to Joel Wagler’s Aug. 10 letter about the T, I feel he is the one who “doesn’t get it.” His kind of us-against-them attitude saddens me.

I and many other people in Lawrence choose not to own cars, not because we can’t afford them, but because we believe not owning one is a better choice for the planet. Being healthy, I walk and ride my bike, and use the T as well. I don’t think a bike would be a good option for the infirm or those with a few toddlers in tow. I prefer not to use a cab for the same issue of energy waste.

I also own my own house and therefore pay real estate tax to support his needs, for example, recreation facilities, and pay lots in state taxes to support his automobile infrastructure. If he does the math, he’ll probably discover he’s getting the better deal, monetarily speaking.
