Shared costs

To the editor:

I am writing in response to the letter published Friday from Joel Wagner. He complained that he didn’t want to pay extra taxes to pay for the T and said that we need expanded recreational facilities more. Everyone in the city pays for all services offered by the city, whether we use them or not. This spreads out the cost of expensive but important programs; if only those who used each of them were to pay for them, many of these programs couldn’t run.

I rarely use the recreational facilities in Lawrence, and see no need to expand them, but I do rely on the T to get home from school every day. We must remember that while each of us must pay for what other people use, everyone else is sharing the cost of what we take advantage of.
