ECKAN seeks help with school supplies

ECKAN is making a last-minute plea for school supply donations.

The Lawrence social service agency has been inundated with families needing help with buying school supplies, ECKAN director Jeanette Collier said. Without more donations, about 100 children may have to start school without classroom necessities, she said.

Supplies needed include Crayola crayons, one-gallon Ziploc bags, primary water colors, backpacks, baby wipes, index cards and thin-point dry erase markers.

“We can always use more notebooks and expandable files,” Collier said.

Monetary donations also will be accepted in the form of checks made out to ECKAN. ECKAN is at 2518 Ridge Court, Suite 103, in the United Way building. It is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

“It’s about $40 a kid,” Collier said of the school-supply cost. “We’re probably going to see 300 kids by the time it is all said and done.”

School starts Wednesday for elementary students in Lawrence public schools.
