January trial set for suspect in rapes

A trial date has been set for a California man accused of sexually assaulting two women in the mid-1990s in Lawrence.

The 38-year-old man, who was extradited to Kansas this summer after advances in DNA technology led authorities to him, faces four counts of rape and three counts of aggravated sodomy.

The man waived his right to a speedy trial so that his lawyer, James Rumsey, would have more time to prepare for the Jan. 28 trial.

Rumsey asked that his client’s bond of $250,000 be reduced, a request denied by Judge Michael Malone.
