Demo derby driver ready for Overbrook

Lawrence resident Kristy Wempe fulfilled a dream Friday by driving in the Douglas County Fair’s demolition derby. Placing third in her heat and winning $50 was a bonus.

She could have competed in the feature round, but decided against it because she wanted to save her 1972 Chevy Impala for Saturday night’s demolition derby in Overbrook.

“I accomplished my goal. I had a blast, and I made it to the feature. That’s enough for me,” she said. “I knew who was going to be in the feature and what was going to be in the feature so I was like, you know what, I am all right.”

The feature round is when the top finishers in each heat compete for the grand prize. The winners of the Lawrence derby were Loren Stone, first; Jamie Frost, second; Jeff Hout, third; Tim Edstrom, fourth; Brian Gilges, fifth; and Kyle Guenther, sixth.

The winners in the compact car heat were Chase Doherty, first; Chris Craig, second; and Jimmy Flowers, third. Chris Nickolson won the heat with 1980s or newer cars.
