Man suspected in rapes appears in court

Judge allows additional charges

Appearing before a packed courtroom, a man accused of sexually assaulting three Lawrence women in the mid-1990s appeared Tuesday in Douglas County Court.

The 38-year-old man was extradited from California earlier this year to face charges, after new advances in DNA testing connected him to rapes committed while he lived in Lawrence from 1992 to 1998.

Two victims – along with a Kansas Bureau of Investigation forensic analyst and a Lawrence police detective – testified during a preliminary hearing held before Judge Mike Malone in Douglas County Court.

The man now faces three counts of rape and two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy. During Tuesday’s hearing, Prosecutor Amy McGowan requested that one more count of aggravated criminal sodomy and another count of rape be filed.

Malone said there was enough evidence for the additional counts to be allowed. He ruled to postpone the suspect’s arraignment so that McGowan could file an amendment listing the additional counts. The arraignment is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
