Lawrence Raiders fall short of fifth state title

Lose to Salina Falcons, 8-2

The Lawrence Raiders’ streak of Class AAA American Legion baseball state titles came to end on Tuesday when they lost to the Salina Falcons 8-2 at Dean Evans Stadium.

After averaging nearly 13 runs per game in the state tournament, the Raiders only collected two runs on five hits. Kyle Cross hit into a double-play in the first inning to score Hunter Scheib. Then in the bottom of the fourth, Cross scored on a Joe Kornbrust sacrifice fly.

All eight of the Falcons’ runs were scored with two outs already recorded in the inning and three of the runs were unearned.

The Raiders had won the last four state championships with last year’s team advancing to the American Legion World Series for the first time in program history.
