Child recovering after near-drowning

Capt. Lexie Engelman was off-duty Saturday night but still had to use her lifesaving training as a member of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical.

Engelman said she was at a party in the 800 section of East 550 Road about 8 p.m. Saturday when someone noticed a 4-year-old child at the bottom of a swimming pool. Engelman said someone dove in and pulled the girl out of the pool, and she helped a nurse who was also at the party initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

After 15 to 20 seconds of CPR, Engelman said, the girl was revived.

“She was blue and threw up a couple times, but regained her color, was alert, knew where she was and knew her name,” Engelman said.

The girl was flown to a Kansas City area hospital. Engelman said the child was released Monday afternoon.

“She’s doing well, and we’re so, so thankful that she was found quickly,” Engelman said.
