Man dies, a day after being pulled from Clinton Lake

A 34-year-old Lawrence man who was pulled from Clinton Lake Sunday died this afternoon at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, said Lt. Kari Wempe, a Douglas County Sheriff’s spokeswoman.

Wempe said the man’s name would not be released until Tuesday because some family members had not been notified.

The man was at a Sunday afternoon family gathering in Bloomington Park on the southwestern side of Clinton Lake, and he attempted to swim from the shore to a pontoon boat. At one point, the man went under water, and bystanders pulled him to shore, officers said on Sunday.

They started life-saving efforts before medics arrived. The man was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, and he had been in critical condition late Sunday night.

“At this particular point, I don’t think we’re calling it more than an unfortunate accident,” Wempe said.
