Lawrence agencies to receive grants

Millions of dollars in federal grants are being distributed to Kansas public safety agencies and services, and some of that money is coming to Lawrence.

The Lawrence Police Department and Women’s Transitional Care Services are on the list to receive funds from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program.

The police department will receive $13,024, while WTCS will receive $45,560. A total of 57 agencies are receiving funds.

The Kansas Department of Corrections also is receiving $84,799 for its program that provides drug treatment to inmates. The grant is from the Federal Residential Substance Abuse Treatment for State Prisoners grant program.

The Lawrence Police Department will use its grant to pay for forensic digital audio equipment and training, department spokeswoman Kim Murphree said. The equipment analyzes sounds.

“This is very similar to the AVID forensic video equipment we got several years ago but is specific to audio enhancement, which we currently do not have,” she said.

The department had to put up 25 percent matching funds of the total price, which amounted to another $4,341 for a total of $17,365.

No one was available on Thursday at WTCS to discuss its grant. The organization provides a safe haven and peer counseling for victims of domestic violence in Douglas, Franklin and southern Jefferson counties.

Other area agencies receiving grants are the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, $135,000; the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office, $5,137; the Leavenworth Police Department, $12,700; and the Leavenworth Youth Achievement Center Inc., $48,239.
