A 34-year-old Kansas City, Mo., man suffered a broken nose when he was attacked early Saturday morning in Lawrence's downtown, according to Lawrence police.
Police said the victim reported he and a female friend had just had an argument about 12:30 a.m. while standing on the east sidewalk in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street.
The victim told police that an unidentified male yelled at him from the west side of the street.
"The victim reports he responded with a gesture and turned to walk toward the Granada," said Kim Murphree, a Lawrence police spokeswoman.
That's when the victim said he was suddenly struck in the face, Murphree said.
The victim reported that another person told him that a white male had struck him and ran north on Massachusetts Street, police reported.
Police said they contacted the victim's friends and tried unsuccessfully to locate the assailant.

So you can't have an argument with a woman and be justified? I don't think you know enough facts to assume that because he was “yelling” at the woman, he was being abusive…and the article didn't state that he was yelling at her, it states that he was yelled AT from the other side of the street. Re-read it…

I read this as too much booze and testosterone on the part of the assailant. True, we can't know the full details of what was happenning between the man and the woman, but the guy 'made a gesture' (which I would interpret as, “It's none of your ____ business, _____.”), turns and walks away. Personally, I wouldn't count walking away as being physically threatening to the woman or anyone else. So, the assailant decides to respond with physical force where none has been threatened. My two cents.

So weak, if you're going to run after you hit someone, you're probably coward anyway…

Yes! A woman can yell and yell and even hit you. The man hits back, he's going to jail and she is not (most of the time). Double standard, yes. Just the way it it.

Just thinking, my wife and I were strolling Mass. early Saturday evening and enjoying all the artsy-fartsy shops, ice-cream, and coffee. Later in the evening, Mass. is more like Westport. Wondering if there is something the city planners can do to keep these somewhat incompatible entertainment venues more seperate from each other.

I've seen enough stories about women getting beaten and nothing happening to state with some confidence that you can't make the above assertation with any degree of certainty or accuracy.

I'm rather disappointed, last time Granda and altercation were paired together on the same page, there was a body at the end. Not saying the guy didn't need it, but you never khow what someone will do. You can't just say whatever to whoever anymore. Some people WILL stand up.
