Custodian suspended after graffiti found

A school custodian at Southwest Junior High School was suspended with pay by the school district last week while the Lawrence Police Department continues to investigate threatening graffiti found in a stall of a men’s restroom.

Police and school officials would not disclose specifics about the content of the graffiti, but said it didn’t make a direct threat.

“I could tell you it was not a direct threat,” said Trish Bransky, principal at SWJH. “It was some puzzling graffiti and no one was in danger because of it.”

She said it’s the school district’s typical procedure to suspend an employee with pay under such circumstances until the outcome of the investigation.

Police have interviewed the custodian. Kim Murphree, police spokeswoman, said the police may turn over a report to the District Attorney’s Office today.
