KU employee receives bomb threat e-mail

A Kansas University employee opened an e-mail about 2 p.m. Friday afternoon stating that four pipe bombs were on or around campus.

The e-mail was sent about 6 a.m. Friday.

KU spokesman Todd Cohen said the e-mail was “so nonspecific of a threat there was nowhere to go really.” An e-mail was sent from the provost’s office at 3:08 p.m. alerting students, faculty and staff of the situation, but not calling for any evacuations or action other than increased vigilance.

KU Director of Public Safety Ralph Oliver asked community members to call 911 in the event that they saw any suspicious activity or a suspicious package.

Cohen said he didn’t know if the Public Safety Office had put additional officers on campus, but he did say they were investigating. The investigation is focusing on the source of the e-mail. KU officials would not identify in which department the employee worked who received the e-mail.
