Farmers Market set for new location, day

Today is set to be a historic day for the Downtown Lawrence Farmers Market.

Vendors will gather today for their first market outside the downtown area, now that city planners approved a plan for a Wednesday market near the Lawrence Community Mercantile at Ninth and Iowa streets.

The market will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. each Wednesday at 925 Iowa. Market organizers are expecting 10 to 20 vendors each week. Products expected to be sold include fruits, vegetables, breads, meats, honey, plants and cut flowers.

Organizers have said they wanted to add the Wednesday market in an effort to attract people who may not regularly go downtown for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday markets.

City planners approved the plan for the new market after organizers agreed to change its proposed location. Sandra Day, a city planner, said the new location in front of Stoneback Appliance alleviated concerns about parking and pedestrian safety.
