Used cell phones wanted for seniors

Douglas County Senior Services is collecting used cell phones that can be fixed to call 911 dispatchers only.

The phones will be given to senior citizens who want to be able to use a cell phone for emergencies but can’t afford or don’t want a regular cell phone plan. The phones will only be able to call 911.

Senior Services also is partnering with Shelter Alliance of Miramar, Fla., which specializes in logistics and underwriting of fundraising programs through the collection and recycling of used cell phones. The money received from the recycled phones will help benefit seniors of Douglas County and the senior center.

Cell phone drop boxes can be found at the following locations:

¢ Baldwin City Public Library, 800 Seventh St.

¢ Eudora City Hall, 4 E. Seventh St.

¢ Eudora Public Library, 14 E. Ninth St.

¢ Lecompton City Hall, 327 Elmore.

¢ Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department, 200 Maine.

¢ Douglas County Senior Services, 745 Vt., Lawrence.
