Free State softball splits pair

? The Free State High softball team split a doubleheader with Olathe North on Friday at the Olathe District Activities Center.

It was business as usual for the Firebirds in Game One, as Catherine Smith pitched a complete game in a 1-0 victory. Smith improved to 5-0 on the season.

Livi Abney’s sixth-inning single drove in Aleesa Kots, who made it home from second just in time to beat a throw to the plate.

Olathe North’s offense erupted in the second game as it cruised to a 12-5 victory, the Firebirds’ first loss of the year. The teams traded blows for the first few innings. Olathe North held a 6-5 lead after the fourth, but the Eagles put the game away with six unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Kots paced Free State from the plate, going 2-for-3.

The Firebirds (7-1) will play host to Shawnee Mission West and Leavenworth on Monday at Free State.
