Downtown back to normal after problems with broken natural gas meter

Life is back to normal between the 1000 and 1100 blocks of Massachusetts and Vermont streets after a car struck a natural gas meter Saturday afternoon.

Shortly after 2 p.m. on Saturday, a car in an alley behind Aladdin Cafe, 1021 Massachusetts St., accidentally drove into a gas meter, causing the odor of leaking natural gas to waft around downtown Lawrence.

Employees at the cafe quickly had customers leave the restaurant. Urban Outfitters and Supersonic Music also had to clear their buildings for a short time. Both Urban Outfitters and Supersonic Music were back to business shortly before 3 p.m.; the owner of Aladdin Cafe said he hoped to have his restaurant back open this evening.

No injuries or fire was reported in the incident. Police had closed off Vermont Street between 10th and 11th streets, but opened them back up before 3 p.m.
