Couple honored for farming success

Roger and Sue Pine, of rural Douglas County, were named a Kansas Master Farmer and Master Farm Homemaker for 2006 last month.

The Pines, along with their son Brian and daughter Shawn Pine Bay, operate Pine Family Farms, a diversified business that spans 3,100 acres in Leavenworth and Douglas counties.

Roger, who is a state senator, is in charge of the traditional side of the farm, including soybean, wheat and corn production. Sue oversees the farm’s balance sheet and cash flows. Brian and Shawn work on the farm’s turf grass operation, among other duties.

Roger’s other roles in the community include an eight-year stint on the Lawrence school board and serving as president of the National Corn Growers Association.

Sue’s community activities include serving on the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission, Horizon 2020 and the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center’s board of directors.

The award program dates to 1927 and is sponsored by K-State Research and Extension, and Kansas Farmer Magazine.
