Safer numbers

To the editor:

Because of the recent burglaries of restaurants in Lawrence, I feel compelled to write that I’ve long been concerned about the number of local food service establishments in Lawrence that have only one person on duty at closing.

I worked my way through college at such establishments, and at that time most restaurants scheduled at least two people at all times for reasons of safety, especially at closing. Cost-cutting may be important, but employee safety should not be jeopardized.

I hope Lawrence restaurants will take heed and keep their employees safe by ensuring no one works alone, before a tragedy results.
