Baker to honor Lawrence leaders

Annual Partners-In-Progress breakfast set for Tuesday

Baker University will honor five Lawrence residents Tuesday for their business achievements and civic contributions.

Steve Glass, Jim Schubert, Peter Curran, Virginia Curran and Jean Shepherd will be recognized during the university’s annual Partners-In-Progress breakfast, set for 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at SpringHill Suites by Marriott in downtown Lawrence.

“Baker University values the commitment these leaders have to Lawrence and Douglas County,” said Patrick Mikesic, director of development for Baker, a private school in Baldwin City. “Their dedication is a benefit to the entire community.”

Baker’s Business Person of the Year is Glass, president of LRM Industries Inc., a Lawrence company with about 100 employees who produce and recycle concrete and asphalt, build roads and highways, provide hourly rentals and operators for heavy equipment, and haul materials for LRM and other companies and contractors in northeast Kansas.

Glass has worked for the company since 1966, when his father Travis owned the operations then known as Lawrence Ready Mix and Lawrence Asphalt Co. Steve Glass started as one of a dozen employees, and now owns the company.

He also serves on the boards of Douglas County Bank and Douglas County Development Inc., and in 2005 and 2006 was president of the Lawrence Schools Foundation.

The award honors individuals who make significant contributions to business and civic interests in the Lawrence area.

“It’s a great honor,” he said. “Certainly there have been a lot of very deserving people who have received it in the past, and I am honored to be among them.”

Three people are being honored for Outstanding Leadership and Achievement in Business:

¢ Schubert, a former Lawrence mayor who retired in 1984 as owner of the Jay Shoppe women’s clothing store in downtown Lawrence and the Campus Jay Shoppe at the northern edge of the Kansas University campus.

¢ Peter Curran, managing partner of Stevens and Brand, a Lawrence law firm. He has represented Lawrence public schools since 1966 and served as an attorney for Lawrence Memorial Hospital for 33 years.

¢ Virginia Curran, a member of Chapter AZ of P.E.O., Meadowlark Garden Club, Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club, St. John’s and Corpus Christi Church choirs and the Lied Center Corporate Campaign.

Baker’s annual Civic Service Award goes to Shepherd, a Douglas County District Court judge since 1984, who has dealt mainly with family law and juvenile cases.

Shepherd, a member of the Kansas University Women’s Hall of Fame, serves on the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Facility Advisory Board and the Douglas County Big Brothers Big Sisters Advisory Board.
